This is a great opportunity to work with the RSPB's Global Species Recovery team and contribute to achieving the Society's strategic objectives for species recovery by creating species action plans and advancing their prioritized conservation efforts for a group of priority species found in the East Atlantic Flyway, Africa, and Asia.
The Postholder Will Concentrate On Several Workstreams
- At First developing, commissioning, and executing priority species initiatives within the East Atlantic Flyway outside of the UK, such as:
- Leading the RSPB's participation in the creation of sustainable management strategies for huntable priority species, including line-management of a contract post for a species recovery officer that is externally financed and focuses on data collection to support this.
- Monitoring, research, and conservation delivery programs centered on priority species with BirdLife and other conservation partners along the East Atlantic Flyway. commissioning and developing partnership projects, and managing associated contracts.
- Establishing and managing contracts for partnership projects with BirdLife and other conservation partners to deliver monitoring, research, and conservation delivery projects outside of the UK that is centered on priority species, such as those connected to priority landscapes in Africa and Asia. These could include the Altyn Dala Conservation Initiative in Kazakhstan, the Greater Gola Landscape in West Africa, and other African and Asian initiatives. This will involve creating new action plans for priority species.
- Developing a program of work focused on vulture conservation in West Africa, in coordination with other vulture-related activities already established in South Asia and Southern Africa, and initiating cooperation projects with colleagues and BirdLife partners.
Essential knowledge, Abilities, and Experience
- A degree in a relevant field or training that is equal.
- Capable of using Microsoft Office tools including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook as well as SharePoint, a system for sharing and collaborating on documents.
- Extensive understanding of conservation concerns affecting wildlife worldwide, especially in the East Atlantic Flyway, Africa, and Asia.
- Working knowledge of one or more priority species' recovery through species conservation.
- Working knowledge of managing conservation projects as well as working in project teams and partnerships.
- Effective cooperation with a wide range of coworkers, external partners, and both technical and non-technical audiences is made possible by excellent communication abilities.
- Excellent communication abilities, including knowledge of writing scientific or technical reports on conservation, as well as the capacity to comprehend and communicate the strength of the scientific evidence supporting a given conservation project or perspective on conservation policy.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of coworkers.
- External partners, and contacts who may have varying levels of technical expertise, different viewpoints, and different priority objectives. Ability and willingness to actively support, influence, nudge, steer, and encourage as needed in order to meet the priority objectives of your role.
- Desirable traits include independence, self-motivation, the ability to use initiative to solve problems, strong organizational and time management skills, and the ability to adhere to deadlines established by superiors, company policies, or external partners.
- Willingness and ability to go internationally to meet with business partners, coworkers, and project teams.
Desirable Knowledge, Experience, And Skills
- A higher education qualification in a subject important to animal conservation.
- International conservation project experience, as well as a track record of collaborating across cultural boundaries.
- Experience managing conservation projects for international partnerships.
- Experience and expertise in the field with international conservation projects.
- Knowledge of and familiarity with the RSPB, including its corporate strategy, the scope of conservation activity, organizational structures, and methods of operation, as well as how it collaborates with and benefits its conservation partners.
- Having previous team leadership and line management experience with employees or volunteers
